They say a picture paints a thousand words, which is why the other day, after having written 1,398 of the aforementioned words, talking about the insidious human trait of ‘I'll be happy when…’, I spent ages rifling through my daughter's Calvin & Hobbes books to find a suitable visual metaphor for you, to make it more memorable.
Should have just waited.
Because of course, scrolling idly through twitter yesterday, I came across this – the simplest, most perfect image that sums it all up.
When I said, “…a pithy little cartoon to depict this for you” – this is exactly what I had in mind! (Although I've never seen it before. It's almost as if you switch your radar on for something, and it comes to you. 🤷🏻♂️)
I laughed out loud as soon as I saw it.
It's as memorable as they come.
It will stay with you, and surface in memory at just the right time – when you catch yourself doing it.
(You could even print it off and leave it somewhere, as a simple reminder.)
This is what we do; what we can spend an entire life doing, if we're not careful:
That's it, right there. A cow. Expressing the human condition.
