Wellbeing Wednesdays Episode #42: Depression
“The one about… Depression”
All of us, from time to time, are affected by low moods, but when sadness, apathy and hopelessness become all-pervasive, we call this DEPRESSION. So this month we took a look at the condition—what causes it, how we experience it, what to do about it—from an innate health perspective.
My aim was for the evening to be as practically helpful as possible, so if you’re suffering with depression, have been given it as a diagnosis and would like to learn more, or have experienced it in the past and feel like you’re walking on eggshells to avoid a repeat occurrence, then this episode is for you 💝
Here’s a run down of what’s inside this 1h37 episode:
Understanding the mechanics of the mind, to make sense of depression
Where negative thinking comes from and what to do about it
How metaphors can be helpful in easing our troubled minds
Why all the current debate around, and treatments for, depression make total sense
The pathologisation of the human experience
An old favourite: planning vs. worrying
The spectrum of psychological functioning: from healthy to floridly psychotic
The curative power of insight and how to get more of it
Managing our demons
Drug-free recovery from depression
In the words of Richard Carlson, “Try to forget everything you have ever been told about unhappiness, pessimism and depression” because in this episode we’re heading in a totally different direction; one that spells the end of depression as you know it.
