One to one

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field…” 🌾

D’you know, if ‘1:1’ wasn’t so easy to type—just three keys, two of which are the same—I’d have set up a keyboard shortcut for it by now, because I type it a LOT!

And I’m a little shamefaced to admit, that the other day (can’t remember when, or why; such is often the nature of insight - they’re just ordinary, everyday miracles, aren’t they? ✨) I realised what it meant.

1:1

So innocuous. It looks really obvious, and unambiguous, doesn’t it?

It looks like it’s saying: This is not ONE to MANY (i.e. group-work), it’s YOU and ME.

It’s 1:1.

But no - it’s not that at all!!

Because YOU + ME = 2, not one, FFS.

🤦🏻‍♂️

When we arrange to meet, the magic happens when we drop the idea of separation (a left-brain creation) and fall into that space of insight.

It’s Rumi’s field:

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
The world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’
Doesn’t make any sense.”

It’s presence. (i.e. no distraction by the mind)

It’s experiencing the basic energy of connection; of life itself, ‘heart to heart’, where there is no you and there is no me, there’s just this (and all the wonder, potential, creativity and insight waiting to spill forth from that place).

It’s oneness meeting itself, oneness.

It’s 1:1.

Can’t believe it’s taken six years for that to land for me, ha ha!

p.s. ‘One to One’ is also the title of a 1986 Howard Jones album—of course!—that I’m revisiting in light of my new ‘discovery’! 😂
