> **“Why this? Why that?”**
> *\~ Howard Jones, “Always Asking Questions”*

If you’ve got kids (or you’ve got a mind), you’ll know this one.

I used to think it would be a phase my daughter grew out of, but no.

The questions are just different these days.

And depending on my current [level of consciousness](https://www.gilespcroft.com/elevator/), when faced with an endless barrage of increasingly unanswerable questions, I’ll either:

  1. Answer them logically, to the best of my ability
  2. Really get into nonsense mode with her, spiralling the two of us into a Daddy-Daughter-bonkers-fest, where we both end up in fits of laughter
  3. Ignore her, hoping it will eventually stop
  4. Lose my rag, shout and end up begging her to please shut up and leave me alone.

All part of the human experience. All welcome.

---

So this one day, I’m veering between **a.** and **c.**

But verging on **d.**

And I think to prevent the loss of rag and ensuing explosion, I find myself suddenly singing that particular Howard Jones song out loud – [*Always Asking Questions*](https://youtu.be/OFBYc-NKfJo?ref=gilespcroft.com). And then—bless her—she comes up with a solution.

> *“I know, Dad! Is it ok if I sellotape my mouth shut?!”*

😆

Having had enough, I just shrug, so she does!

> *“It won’t help,”* I suggest, *“it’s not your mouth that’s the problem - your mind will carry on talking!”*

But this is what we do, isn’t it?

- The mind talks →
- We listen to it →
- We believe it and we try and [do its bidding](https://www.gilespcroft.com/three-ways-to-deal-with-a-busy-mind/), because it looks like the way to be happy is to do/get/change what it *says* to do/get/change →
- All manner of weird and wonderful human behaviours ensue (some get [given diagnostic labels](https://www.gilespcroft.com/diagnoses-the-power-and-the-peril/)) →
- The mind doesn’t like the [habits & behaviours](https://www.gilespcroft.com/behaviour-stems-from-belief/) it observes (that *it’s* the root cause of, FFS!! 🙄) →
- And we end up trying and [change the *behaviours*](https://www.gilespcroft.com/stop-trying-to-change-your-behaviour/), thinking *that’s* going to solve the problem!

🤦🏻‍♂️

Bonkers.

Anyway, all she discovered from sellotaping up her mouth was that she couldn’t eat her breakfast, and when you sneeze, it’s way messier 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

---

Your mind will *always* be asking questions. That’s just what minds do.

You don’t have to stop it.

But you also don’t have to listen to it.

And that’s a way better solution than sellotaping up your mouth.

p.s. If your mind is a full-on blabbermouth that makes your life a misery and you’ve tried everything you can to shut it up, or even ignore it, and are getting nowhere, then isn’t it time we had a chat? Because you know by now that I can help, don’t you?

Don’t take my word for it. This came in from a client, kind enough to detail some of their experience (thank you! 🥰):

> *“My home life was extremely stressful and I was finding it difficult to cope each day. This had been ongoing for 2 years. Life felt very heavy and I was very stuck in my way of thinking about my situation … In reality, an insight which came in the first 30 minutes of working with Giles helped me to see that my own mind was keeping me a prisoner. I could ‘see’ the closed system that was keeping me trapped in the situation. It was really what I was looking for when I had been looking for support in other places … I would really recommend working with Giles. I love how easy he is to engage with and frankly I’ve found it quite fun working with him. I would encourage contacting him as I can say that *my life has been changed*.”*

Can’t say fairer than that!
